Dining at Violet Oon in Singapore was an unforgettable journey into the heart of Peranakan cuisine, blending traditional flavors with a modern twist. From the moment I stepped in, the elegant ambiance and the aroma of spices promised a culinary adventure.

The menu is a treasure trove of delights. Starting with the Gado Gado, this dish was a beautiful symphony of textures and flavors, topped with a creamy peanut sauce that was just mildly spicy enough to tickle the palate without overwhelming it. The Tau Hu Goreng, was another starter that stood out for its simplicity and the punch of flavor from Violet’s signature sauce.

Moving on to the mains, the Buah Keluak Ayam was a revelation. The complex, earthy flavors of the buah keluak nut, mixed with the spicy and tangy chicken stew, made for a dish I would come back for. The Beef Rendang was equally impressive, with tender beef that melted in the mouth, enveloped in a rich, aromatic sauce.

Seafood lovers would rejoice at the Udang Goreng Chilli . The prawns were perfectly cooked, and the spicy fragrant chilli padi garlic rempah was a bold statement of flavor that perfectly complemented the sweetness of the prawns.

No meal at Violet Oon would be complete without trying their Dry Laks. It’s an innovative take on a classic, with the rich laksa gravy coating the fresh rice noodles beautifully, topped with prawns and bean sprouts for an added crunch.

Ending on a sweet note, the Sugee Cake was a moist and flavorful dessert, with the richness of semolina and ground almonds shining through.
